Possum's Eel Cave

This place had to be up there with the prettiest brick drains I have visited, and it's a real hidden little gem without a spot of graffiti, which I thought was just awesome. Besides the odd brick waiting to come loose and crush your skull, and sounds of thunderous impending doom, it provided for a great explore. Or is that because of?...

Aydun and I waited till no one was about and disappeared inside it's inconspicuous enhance.

After a short walk, boring gave way to luscious orange brick 3 layers deep, a real work of art, with wonderfully architectured inlet channels curved into the brick.

Every now and again one of the below crescent shaped junctions would provide a shaft to the surface for a manhole, which seemed like it would be a very, very high and very, very spider infested ascent to the surface.

Some of the side inlet channels had obviously been hacked in after the initial creation and it showed.

We took some snaps and wandered further in, looking for the first offshoots that appeared on our maps of the place. I took a hunched waddle down this little one and round the bend for some snaps. Aydun provided some light work from the main tunnel, which produced the first image in in this set.

There were a few nice little side inlets that warranted a quick diversion down, and some that were just a bit too tight to bother. Apparently the below was also too tight to bother with proper exposure.

We traipsed further on, keeping an eye on the time, not wanting to loose our convenient exit.

A distant thundering of water echoed down the tunnel and both of us turned on our heels and silently ran for about 2 minutes before the adrenaline dissipated marginally. The sound still present, cooler heads assessed it as too small otherwise we should have see some evidence of it by this time.

We resolved to head back up the way we came and find the source of the little life affirming jog.

Some time later we found a small waterfall coming over the lip of the drain where it changed height. Nothing of any excitement anymore.

After some more drain selflies, we decided it was time to head back before the exit got ugly.

Taking a different route out, we waited for the all clear and ventured out into the living, and onto the next drain which turned out to be a real snooze after the glorious brick. You can't really compete I suppose. Certainly not worth taking the camera out for anyhow...

Back sore and feet wet, we took to cruising round checking out manholes and spots of interest for an hour our two, and finding a few places that deserved a trip back we called it a night.

Eel cave definitely deserves a few trips back as there is lots more to see and snap in there and I am curious to see its other end.
